Opening night of the World Innovation Submit for Education 2012 (WISE): the guests' dinner.
Each year, WISE gathers experts coming from all around the world and more than 100 countries, all invited by the Qatar Foundation. As a real soft power tool of the emirate, WISE places education at the centre of the institutional, political and economic debate.
Qatar is one of the Arab peninsular emirates, on the Persian Gulf shoreline. Bordered by Saudi Arabia, Qatar's economy relies on oil and gas. Being the world's fourth-largest gas exporter, gas remains the major driver of Qatar's economy. The emirate is governed by Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani who became at the age of 33 Emir of Qatar on 25 June 25th, 2013 after his father's abdication. He is the youngest emir at the head of an Arab State.
On June 5th, 2017, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen, Libya, Mauritania, the Maldives, and Mauritius broke off diplomatic relations with Qatar, accusing the emirate of supporting several terrorist groups. As its Gulf neighbours enforced the closure of all land, air and sea borders to Qatar, the country is quarantined.
